Tanzania’s 3rd largest town and second busiest port. Though Tanga has never attracted many tourists, especially after the stopping of the passenger train services to Moshi and Dar es Salaam, it has got few sites of reasonable interest.
Tanga is relatively quiet and characterized by avenues lined with German and Asian buildings.
Tanga is very well connected to other major towns in Tanzania by tarmac roads. It is about 6 hours drive from Dar es Salaam and 4 hours from Moshi. However, inspite of being a coastal town there are no ferry or motorboat connections to Pemba, Zanzibar or Mafia islands.
Places to Visit
Day trips from Tanga can be organized to see the 14th century mosque remains at Toten island, Amboni limestone caves, Galanos hot springs, Tongoni ruins and the nearby coastal town of Pangani.
